Since the 1950s, researchers have
been working to
develop fusion
energy & eventually fusion power plants.
According to reports, US government scientists have reached the long-sought milestone of a net power gain in a fusion reaction.
The discovery is anticipated to be a game-changer in the search for endless, carbon-free power.
No research team has yet been able to outpace a fusion reaction's energy consumption.
Federal Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California conducted the experiment.
This employed a technique known as inertial confinement fusion.
This entails firing lasers at a microscopic hydrogen plasma pellet.
About 2.5 megajoules of energy, or about 12% of the energy consumed in the lasers was created by the fusion reaction.
