They don’t say dogs are a man’s best friends for nothing. They truly are!
Seven years ago, Sallie Gregory-Hammett of Greenville, South Carolina, brought in Charlie, an adorable golden retriever as her first pet dog. She was then a mere 23, had just shifted base to a new city, and the dog brought in much love into her life. It truly was her best friend!
“I know it’s cliché but he was my best friend,” Gregory-Hammett wrote to HuffPost. “He went with me everywhere —work, hiking, trips to Home Depot. He was just a constant source of comfort and companionship and joy. Everyone that knew me knew Charlie and knew how much I loved him.”
The unconditional love between Sallie and Charlie just grew stronger with time and the two were inseparable.
Unfortunately, this year in September, Charlie passed away after fighting lymphoma for five months. Sallie was shattered by this insurmountable loss and decided to pour out her feelings by writing an obituary for her beloved pet.
She reminisced the amazing times she had with Charlie and penned down all the things that she adored about him.
“He was good at a lot of things, but he was best at unconditional love,” she continued. “He taught everyone he met about loving people, and always seeing the good in everyone.”
She first wanted to publish the obituary in the local newspapers but was not able to do so because it was expensive. Then, she decided to create a mock-newspaper obituary as a keepsake and share it with her family and friends, who, after reading the heartfelt tribute encouraged her to put it up on social media.
So, Sallie put up the obituary on Twitter with a message that read, “I wrote my dog an obituary because of course I did. He was the best boy.”

So heartwarming was this obituary that the post quickly went viral and was shared and liked thousands of times. Many others wrote to her about their experiences about losing their loved pets.
Clearly overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, Sallie thanked her well wishers for their support.
“The likes are awesome but the best part has been all of the replies,” she told HuffPost. “Reading about everyone else’s special doggos, and all the people that say they loved Charlie even though they never met him. It’s just been so comforting — it makes me feel less alone and just flooded with love.”
