Vets use Lego to help turtle move again

When the 15-year-old turtle Pedro was adopted by Sandra Traylor, he had already lost one of his hind legs and, as a result, was three-legged. However, Pedro escaped from his enclosure in Traylor’s backyard, and when he returned a few months later, he lost his other hind leg too. Consequently, his mobility was severely impaired.

This is when Traylor approached veterinarians at the Louisiana State University for help. They did a thorough examination of Pedro and found that he was medically fit. The only problem was his mobility.

And, they came up with an ingenious plan to help Pedro move again. That plan involved some syringes parts, animal-safe epoxy, and a Lego car kit! Yes, you heard it right. A Lego car kit!

The interns at Louisiana State University put all of these items together to make a great wheelchair for Pedro through which he can now wheel himself around. They glued the Lego pieces underneath Pedro and attached the wheels to it, helping Pedro become mobile. The process took a couple of hours to finish but Pedro can now zoom himself around merrily and much more quickly and effectively than before.

Interestingly, the wheelchair can also be removed to clean Pedro so that his hygiene is maintained.

Kudos to the vets at the University who had such a simple but brilliant solution to this problem! And I am certain that if Pedro could speak, he would more than want to say a big thank you to the doctors.
