In an effort to spur climate change initiatives, the United Nations Secretary António Guterres has reappointed former New York city mayor and businessman Michael Bloomberg as the Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions.

He is expected to work closely with governments, industries, companies, and institutions to ensure an accelerated transition to a clean energy economy,

“Mr. Bloomberg will support the work of the secretary-general in growing and strengthening the coalition of governments, companies, cities and financial institutions committing to net-zero before 2050 in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement,” according to a statement released by the United Nations.

Further, his “work will build on the outcomes of the 2019 Climate Action Summit and 2020 Climate Ambition Summit and will stress the Secretary-General’s call to ensure that all measures to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic are aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement.”

Bloomberg also tweeted about his new assignment, saying  “climate change is a global challenge, and I’m looking forward to continuing to accelerate progress.”

I’m honored to serve as @UN Special Envoy for Climate Ambition & Solutions, and the first Global Ambassador for #RacetoZero & #RacetoResilience. Climate change is a global challenge, and I’m looking forward to continuing to accelerate progress.https://t.co/M73XGiFwFt pic.twitter.com/QM6c1jPRQb

A globally recognized and renowned figure for his efforts to accelerate climate action, Bloomberg is the board president of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, a global network of 97 major cities around the world that represent one-fourth of the global economy and that are pursuing high ambition climate action. He is also co-chair of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy, a network of more than 10,000 cities and local governments.  Apart from this, Bloomberg also currently serves as the Chair of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures. He has also written a book called Climate of Hope:  How Cities, Businesses, and Citizens Can Save the Planet.

The climate change activist was first appointed as the special envoy on cities and climate change in 2014 by the then-UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

We hope that Bloomberg’s appointment will enable and ensure that nations across the world begin using clean and sustainable forms of energy.
