In a vast majority of nations across the world, most of the workforce is working from home. Other than ‘essential workers’ that include health workers, grocery store owners, policemen, and pharmacists, the rest of the workforce is at home to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

New Zealand made two additions to this list of essential workers recently.

Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern announced that the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny will be deemed as essential workers in the island nation.

Soothing off concerns from children, Ardern confirmed that the Fairy and the Bunny are essential workers but also added that they might fail to visit all households this year due to the pandemic.

At the daily coronavirus briefing on 6th April, Monday, she said, “You’ll be pleased to know that we do consider both the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny to be essential workers.”

“As you can imagine at this time, of course they are going to be potentially quite busy at home with their family as well and their own bunnies.”

“And so I say to the children of New Zealand if the Easter Bunny doesn’t make it to your household, then we have to understand that it is a bit difficult at the moment for the Bunny to perhaps get everywhere.”

She also announced a nationwide Egg Hunt for the children to make this Easter “extra special.” She posted a picture of an Easter Egg on her Instagram account, asking children to colour it and then stick it in a window at home so everyone in their street could “have the chance to hunt for eggs this weekend”.

She also promised to share a few of these eggs on her social media account, asking children to email their coloured eggs to her at primeminister@parliament.govt.nz or share it on social media with the hashtag #NZEggHunt

This is a message for the kids of New Zealand. I’ve been asked by lots of you whether the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny are an essential service (I even got asked in a press conference today!) I have good news, the are! But because we’re all in isolation at the moment, the Easter Bunny might not make it to every house this year (they probably have to look after their own Bunny family too). So just in case, I’m wondering if you’ll help me create an Easter egg hunt for all the children in your neighbourhood? You can draw your own Easter egg, or you can colour in the one that some of my clever friends helped to make. All you have to do is colour it in or decorate it, and pop it in your window for other kids to find. I’d also love to see your designs. If you email them to primeminister@parliament.govt.nz, or share them on social media using the hashtag #NZEggHunt, I’ll pop a few of them here and on Facebook over the Easter weekend. Have fun everyone! P.S you can print a copy of this colouring sheet over on my Facebook page.

One of the youngest leaders in the world, 39-year-old Ardern has often earned worldwide acclaim and praise for handling various crisis. Earlier, to ebb the coronavirus pandemic, she announced a nationwide lockdown on 25th March for four weeks.

Such an empathetic and brilliant leader Ardern is! Do you agree? Let us know your views in the comments section below.
