What do you do when you have your grandma’s 95th birthday but you are also expected to practice social distancing and not have big gatherings?

You cancel the celebration? Of course not! You still celebrate, but do so with a twist.

The Byrne family in New York was did exactly that on 18th March, 2020.

Grandma Kathleen Byrne was turning 95 and her plans were to see her family and friends. But, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and with social distancing being the norm, her plans had to be cancelled.

However, her family insisted on celebrating her special day. So, they all came in and decided to wish her a happy birthday with birthday caps, balloons, bright party decorations, and placards reading ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’, but with a safe distance.

The Byrne family, which included Kathleen’s children, grandchildren, and grandchildren, lined up at the porch of her house in the colourful best and sang the happy birthday song for her.

“We had to keep our distance but we couldn’t not see our best girl on her birthday!!!” one of Kathleen’s granddaughter, Sara Byrne, wrote on Instagram. “Happy 95th Gram we love you SO much!!!”

“She has done so much for our family and we are so so thankful to still have her, especially during this crazy time our world is going through,” her granddaughter told CNN. “We wanted to show up for her to make her feel special on her big day no matter what.”

“Oh, I love it. Thank you,” Kathleen, whose family includes seven sons, 22 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren, shouts from her door as she watches the celebration with a smile. “I’m sorry we aren’t all together.”

We applaud the Bryne family for doing the right thing in these time of crisis. And we are sure Kathleen will have a belated celebration of her birthday with her entire family soon!
