5th September is observed as the ‘International Day of Charity’ across the world.

It aims to spread awareness among people across the world on the importance of philanthropy and seeks to mobilize them to contribute to making the world a better place through volunteer and philanthropic activities.

5th September was chosen as the day for the ‘International Day of Charity’ to commemorate the passing away of Mother Teresa, one of the biggest philanthropists and humanitarians that the world has ever seen. To recognize the immense contribution that she made to humankind, this day is observed on her death anniversary.

This day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.

Why is charity important?

Charity is the act of extending love, money, or kindness to another person, without expecting anything in return.

Being involved in charitable pursuits can help in personal development as well as the development of the entire community. Here are some reasons why all of us must engage ourselves in charity.

It makes you feel happy

Various studies have demonstrated the correlation between giving and happiness. In fact, science has proven that giving releases the ‘happy hormones’ in your brain, making you feel good about yourself. The fact that you are able to give to others makes you feel more valuable. Also, being able to change the life of someone else for the better will certainly make you feel happy and content.

It makes you feel grateful for what you have

When you give and you see what others do not have, you also realize how lucky you are. Giving makes you thankful and grateful for what you have. In this manner, you build more gratitude towards all that you have in your life.

It builds a stronger society

The worst of the humanitarian crises and suffering can be mitigated by people contributing more to charity. Also, with so much violence, misery, and hate everywhere today, more charity is the need of the hour. Imagine what a wonderful place the world will be if all of us try to give more to others!

And remember, charity does not mean contributing in terms of only money. Giving your time to others in need is also charity.

This ‘International Day of Charity,’ let’s pledge to donate more of our time and money to the less privileged! What do you say?
