Earth Day is observed on 22nd April each year to show support towards environmental protection.

This year marks 50 years since the first Earth Day was observed. Isn’t it ironical that this anniversary is being celebrated at a time when the Earth is facing one of its most severe pandemics.

Theme for Earth Day 2020

The theme for Earth Day 2020 is ‘Climate Action.’

Climate change is one of the most severe and critical problems that the world today faces. This day seeks to bring to light the perils of climate change and discuss ways in which this problem can be mitigated.

History of Earth Day

On 22nd April 1970, 20 million Americans – which is 10 per cent of the population of the United States at that time – flooded the streets as a peaceful, unified response to environmental ignorance and the various environmental crisis such as smog and oil fills that plagued the earth. The protestors wanted a new way forward for Planet Earth.

This was the beginning of one of the most impactful environmental movements ever.

The consequences of the first Earth Day were remarkable – a number of laws were passed across nations in the world for the protection of the environment.

Subsequently, the United Nations designated 22nd April as International Mother Earth Day through a resolution adopted in 2009.

Today, the day is observed across over 180 nations across the world.

Google Doodle on Earth Day

Google celebrated this day by a wonderful, animated doodle about one of the most critical and hardworking organisms in the world – bees. Created in collaboration with The Honeybee Conservancy in New York, this doodle has been led by Doodler Gerben Steenks, with engineering by Doodlers Jacob Howcroft & Stephanie Gu.

The doodle underscores the importance of bees by showing an informative video about how they act as pollinators. It also brings in a fun game that users can play while learning facts about these little creatures and the massive impact that they have on the world.

The Earth Day is an opportunity for us to reflect upon and evaluate the relationship that we share with Mother Earth. Let’s ensure that we do not exploit Earth, but rather, create a beautiful and symbiotic relationship.

Happy Earth Day, folks!
