19th August is observed as ‘World Humanitarian Day’ by the United Nations “to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world.” It seeks to recognize the contributions of humanitarian workers across the globe, promote their safety and security, and advocate for the well-being and survival of people that are afflicted with crises. It also seeks to commemorate the work of humanitarian personnel who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes.

Why is World Humanitarian Day observed?

It was on 19th August in 2003 that a terrorist attack occurred in the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, killing 22 people that included the top representative of the United Nations in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. It is to commemorate this event that World Humanitarian Day is observed each year on 19th August.

Theme for World Humanitarian Day 2019

The theme for the World Humanitarian Day 2019 is ‘Women Humanitarians.’ This seeks to recognize the efforts of women aid workers from across the globe that work tirelessly and persistently for those who need help.
