One of the world’s rarest monkeys, the Francois langur was born recently at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia.
This little monkey is only a week old and has not been named yet. Its distinctive bright orange hair is seen in the pictures released by the zoo. Interestingly, this bright orange hair lasts only for a few weeks and begin to darken soon. The adult Francois langur has black hair.
These monkeys, also called Francois leaf monkey, would be widespread across the Asian regions of China, Vietnam, and Laos earlier. However, extensive poaching and habitat destruction have drastically reduced the number of these monkeys. Today, it is estimated that only about 3,000 of these species are existing in the world. As a result, these species have been listed as endangered since 2008 by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
“Seeing Francois’ Langurs in the wild is incredibly rare, but seeing a baby is even more so,” said senior zookeeper, Jane Marshall.
“Not a lot of people know about Francois’ Langurs as a species, but these beautiful animals are very vibrant animals, who are incredibly agile and intelligent,” Marshall added.
