An adorable golden retriever puppy called Rae has recently become a social media sensation, with her Instagram followers increasing from a mere 36 to a massive 178,000 in a few days.
And what is so special about this pup?
So Rae is a ‘unicorn’ puppy, meaning she has only one ear on the top of its head, just as a unicorn has only one horn at the top of its head. Her name is also ‘ear’ spelled backwards!
Unfortunately, shortly after her birth, Rae was injured critically and was taken to the Family Friends Veterinary Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While we are unsure what happened, it seems as though Rae’s mother, when cleaning off the placenta or amniotic sack, was a little too forceful, resulting in an entire ear being plucked off Rae.
Rae had a critical surgery just a few hours after her birth and doctors were not sure whether she could pull through. But, being the fighter that she is, Rae survived and went on to make a complete recovery with just one ear sticking on top of her head.
Brianna Vorhees, who is a receptionist at the Family Friends Veterinary Hospital, was immediately drawn onto the golden retriever. She had lost her own golden retriever, Loki, to lymphoma a few years back and had decided that if there ever was a golden retriever that would be brought to the hospital, she would take care of it.
And into her life came Rae!
As for why Rae’s ear is at the top of her head, she said to CNN, “We’re assuming because of the sutures is why the ear migrated to the top of her head.” “I think as her skin grew, and she started to grow, that it just kind of migrated up there.”
While her colleagues began calling the puppy unicorn, it was her husband who christened the pup ‘Rae.’
Recently, Rae turned 12 weeks old and she has absolutely no pain nor does she suffer from any hearing issues.

Samantha Smith, a veterinary technician at Family Friends Veterinary Hospital, posted an adorable video of Rae on the social media platform TikTok. And netizens went crazy watching it! Rae turned into a social media star overnight, with the video currently garnering a whopping 3.8 million views!
On Instagram too, Rae is now a celebrity with close to 200,000 followers. And why should she not? She is the most adorable puppy that you’d ever see!
