The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way the world works: practicing social distancing and wearing masks is the new normal.
Weddings and family gatherings are now being conducted in never-seen-before ways, with ‘drive-in’ weddings, ‘online’ parties, and ‘no contact’ birthdays becoming commonplace.
Recently, an Indian couple brought in a new manner of collecting gifts from their loved ones for their wedding.
In many states of South India, a tradition of gifting ‘moi’ or cash is prevalent, where guests bless the newly wedded couple with money to start off their new lives.
And Siva Sankari and Saravanan, the bride and groom, from the city of Madurai in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu found an ingenuous manner of collecting ‘moi’ without maintain much contact with guests – they printed the QR codes of two payment apps on their wedding cards, using which guests could transfer money directly into their accounts.
The bride, who is an engineer by profession, thought of this innovative idea to ensure that social distancing would be followed.
“It was the bride’s idea and since it was attractive, we introduced it,” said Ms. Siva Sankari’s maternal uncle B.R. Sasikumar, 48, a computer service engineer.
“About 30 persons had used the QR code facility and gave cash as their wedding present,” said TJ Jeyanthi, Siva Sankari’s mother. Jeyanthi, who runs a beauty parlour in Madurai, added, “This is the first time such a thing has been attempted in our family.”
