Three pioneers in the field of Artificial Intelligence – Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun – won the prestigious Turing Award for 2018. They have been awarded the prize “for conceptual and engineering breakthroughs that have made deep neural networks a critical component of computing.”
The three winners have been working on AI and deep learning for a long time now and have done remarkable work in this field. Bengio holds the position of Professor at the University of Montreal and Scientific Director at Mila, Quebec’s Artificial Intelligence Institute. Hinton is VP and Engineering Fellow of Google, Chief Scientific Adviser of The Vector Institute, and University Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto. LeCun, on the other hand, LeCun is Professor at New York University and VP and Chief AI Scientist at Facebook.
The three recipients have influenced each other and worked together often times. For instance, LeCun and Bengio worked together at Bell Labs in the early 90s while LeCun worked on his postdoctoral research under the supervision of Hilton.

What is the Turing Award?
The Turing Award, widely known as the Nobel Prize in Computing, is named after Alan Turing, often credited with being the founder of artificial intelligence and theoretical computer science. The award is given by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and carries a cash prize of $1 million, with financial support provided by Google.
It was first awarded in 1966.
