The much-awaited same-sex marriage bill has been passed by the Taiwan lawmakers earlier on 17th May. Thousands of supporters flocked outside the parliament building amidst rain in Taipei, as the parliament made its decision.
After almost two years of the Constitutional Court passing a ruling and giving time to amend or enact new laws, the decision has finally come to grounds. Following the controversial poll in November last year when around 67% people rejected the passing of same-sex marriage, the lawmakers of Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan made it a reality which would go into effect from May 24th.
This landmark ruling has made the island the first self-ruled island in Asia to adopt this legislation. The law allows same-sex couples to form “exclusive permanent unions” followed by a second clause that allows them to apply with government agencies for “marriage registration.”
However, the conservative groups of Taiwan don’t seem to be very happy with the decision. They have stated that the parliament has ignored the views of the majority of the public.
After years of LGBT community campaigns, the vote came as a humongous victory, yet again proving that love conquers all laws. Following this decision, Tsai Ing-wen, the President of DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) took to Twitter and expressed that, “Today, we have a chance to make history and show the world that progressive values can take root in an East Asian Society.” She further added, “We took a big step towards true equality, and made Taiwan better.”
This legislation in Taiwan is expected to offer a great example for the rest of the Asian regions. The law is seen as a beacon of hope that is going to help and make the world a much better place. Love won in Taiwan, and we look forward to seeing it win in many more places.
