Most nations across the world are now easing their lockdown restrictions, and the nation of Romania, located in south-eastern Europe is no exception.
Post the two-month lockdown, Grigore Lup, a Romanian shoemaker from the Transylvanian city of Cluj, visited the nearby market to buy some seedlings for his garden and noticed that the people in the streets were not maintaining the social distancing rules and mandates.
So, Lup decided to exploit his talent of making shoes to ensure that the people respect the rules of social and physical distancing.
An expert at making shoes, Lup has been doing so for close to 4 decades now. Now 55, he first began making shoes when he was merely a teenager. His store that he opened in 2001 creates tailor-made shoes and traditional folk dance ensembles for theatres and opera houses across Romania.
And he came up with a brilliant idea of creating long-nosed leather shoes that would help in keeping people apart. These shoes come in a European size of 75!
“If two people wearing these shoes were facing each other, there would be almost one-and-a-half metres between them,” Lup said about the interesting shoes!
And interestingly, Lup has already begun getting a few orders for these social distancing shoes, which require about one square metre of leather and two days of work and craftsmanship to get ready.
They cost around $115, or 500 lei a pair.
