Saudi Arabia hosted the G20 Summit of the world’s wealthiest nations on 21st and 22nd November 2020, creating history by becoming the first Arab nation to do so.

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman presided over the virtual summit that was held with the theme ‘Realizing Opportunities of the 21st Century for All.’

The three key agenda items that were addressed under the theme are: ‘Empowering People, by creating the conditions in which all people – especially women and youth – can live, work and thrive’; ‘Safeguarding the Planet, by fostering collective efforts to protect our global commons’; and ‘Shaping New Frontiers, by adopting long-term and bold strategies to share benefits of innovation and technological advancement’.

The coronavirus pandemic and efforts to tackle the economic recession caused due to it by facilitating global cooperation dominated the discussions among leaders.

“We have a duty to rise to the challenge together during this summit and give a strong message of hope and reassurance,” Saudi Arabia’s King Salman said in the summit’s opening remarks.

World leaders including Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany; Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia; Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada; Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India; and Donald Trump, the President of the United States attended the summit online.

Italy will assume the rotating presidency of the G20 next year.
