The incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi won a second term after a historic win in the Indian elections of 2019. By winning over 300 seats of the 543-seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) well crossed the 272-mark required for a majority. The party has far exceeded its seat tally of the 2014 elections, in which it had won 282 seats.

The main opposition party, Indian National Congress, headed by Rahul Gandhi – the scion of the political dynasty – has conceded defeat.

This was one of the biggest elections ever with over 600 million voters voting across a six-week process. The entire process was conducted in seven phases. The voter turnout percentage was 67 per cent – the highest for any Indian election ever.

In what was seen as a defining election, Modi described himself as a ‘chowkidar’ – a watchman. And from the results, it certainly seems like Indians trusted their watchman.

A slew of congratulatory messages poured in for the Prime Minister. Leaders across the globe joined in to congratulate Modi on his fantastic victory.

Who is Narendra Modi?

Born on 17th September 1950, Narendra Modi has been the Prime Minister of India since 2014. Before this, he had served as the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and is known to drive the massive progress of Gujarat during his tenure as the Chief Minister.

Post this win in 2019, Modi has become the first ever Prime Minister of India outside the Indian National Congress to win two consecutive terms with full majority.
