Police on a routine patrol in Broxtowe, Nottinghamshire recently were in for a surprise when the found an unlikely guest – a Humboldt penguin waddling through the streets.
Nicknamed Po-Po, the bird had escaped from a farm enclosure in Strelley and had managed to walk up a mile. It was, subsequently, returned to its rightful owner by the authorities.
Interestingly, the amiable bird even posed for pictures with the police.
“We see some very interesting things while out on patrol, but a penguin walking up the middle of the road has to be one of the more bizarre findings we have come across,” PC Gareth Philp, from Nottinghamshire Police, said.
“We nicknamed him Po-Po. He posed for some pictures with us and he was very friendly with our officers while we made contact with his owner.
“He was then safely returned home.”
The Humboldt penguins are native to South America and are named so after the Prussian explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Unfortunately, they are listed as vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Such species, while not endangered, are at immediate or imminent risk of becoming so.
