Widely dubbed as the Oscars of the fashion world, the Met Gala is an annual fundraising and benefit event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Held on the first Monday of May each year, it is considered one of the biggest event in the fashion industry, where celebrities and achievers from the fields of music, film, fashion, and art come in to exhibit different extravagant outfits based on each year’s theme.
It started decades back in 1946 by American fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert to encourage donations from the high society of New York. It has always been held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
This year, which was the 71st anniversary of the event, the theme was ‘Camp: Notes to Fashion,’ which was inspired by American writer, philosopher, and political activist Susan Sontag’s seminal 1964 essay, Notes on Camp.
Sontag had written in her essay, “The hallmark of camp is the spirit of extravagance. Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of three million feathers.” So, this year, celebrities were encouraged to be as theatrical as possible.
This year too, the gala was attended by several A-list celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, newlyweds Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, Jennifer Lopez, Dua Lipa, and Kylie Jenner.
