In a great move to reduce plastic consumption and waste, Marriott International – the world’s largest chain of hotels – is planning to eliminate small plastic toiletry bottles in all its properties worldwide by December 2020.

As part of this initiative to reduce its environmental impact, Marriott – which serves more than 1 million guests each night – will phase out miniature bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and bath gel in all of its 7,000 properties worldwide. They will be replaced by pump-topped large bottles, which will contain 10 to 12 times the amount of shampoo or gel that the small bottles contain.

According to an official statement released by the company, this initiative, when fully implemented, will eliminate an astounding 500 million tiny bottles of plastic, which equals to around 1.7 million pounds of plastic!

Marriott first initiated this brilliant move of replacing tiny bottles of toiletries in January 2018 in around 450 of its select-service hotels. Today, around 1,000 of its hotels have adopted this initiative successfully. Interestingly, the hotel guests have also been very receptive of this move.

“Our guests are looking to us to make changes that will create a meaningful difference for the environment while not sacrificing the quality service and experience they expect from our hotels,” Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marriott International said on this initiative.

This move comes close on the heels of the InterContinental Hotel Group announcing that it will phase out such single-use plastic toiletries by 2021.

We believe that this is the need of the hour and that more industries and brand should make this move soon. What do you think?
