As per recent studies by a team of researchers from Norway and Switzerland, millions of floating islands can convert the atmospheric carbon dioxide to fuel, ultimately protecting our environment from the damage caused by burning fossil fuels. Scientists have said that these islands will be brought together on a large scale to convert CO2 into fuel.
In a paper published in pnas.org, researchers have proposed the creation of ‘Solar Methanol Islands,’ which will effectively use solar energy to convert the atmospheric carbon dioxide into the liquid fuel methanol.
“Liquid carbon-based energy carriers are ideal for mobility purposes. The recycling of atmospheric CO2 into fuels offers 100% efficiency with no CO2 emissions,” said the team of researchers.
The researchers intend to use photovoltaic cells to convert solar energy into electricity. The electricity thus produced will be used to power the extraction of carbon dioxide from the water in the seas, and the production of hydrogen. These gases produced will be made to react to form methanol, which will be ultimately used as a fuel.
One facility of such a setup will contain about 70 of these artificial islands, covering an area of around 0.4 square miles. For optimum use of the natural environment, the facilities will be installed in an area having high waves and less probability for hurricanes.
