In the Chinese city of Jinan, cockroaches are being used to tackle food waste. As bizarre as it sounds, this is a thriving enterprise. Every day around 50 tonnes of food waste is being fed to these cockroaches, which are kept in a secure plant. Since the cockroaches eat anything and everything, this process is helping the city in getting rid of the food waste quite easily. And once the cockroaches die, they are being used as feed for pigs. Cockroach extract is also being used in beauty masks, diet pills, and hair loss treatment. So, it’s a win-win situation for all! This trend of cockroach farming for tackling waste is slowly spreading into other Chinese cities as well.
