Google to invest $7 billion in US offices, to create 10,000 jobs

Google said that it planned to invest more than $7 billion towards expanding office spaces and data centres across the United States in 2021. It also said that this move would create over 10,000 full-time jobs.

This initiative came after Alphabet, Google’s parent company, had stopped spending on real estate last year amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

In a blog post, CEO of Alphabet, Sundar Pichai said that as a part of the expansion initiatives, the company will add thousands of new roles at its offices in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and New York. It also is planning on opening new offices in Seattle, Houston, and Mississippi.

“Coming together in person to collaborate and build community is core to Google’s culture, and it will continue to be an important part of our future,” Pichai said in an blog post. “So we continue to make significant investments in our offices around the country, as well as our home state of California, where we will be investing over $1 billion this year.”

He added that 2020 was Google’s largest year ever for hiring Black and Latinx Googlers in the United States for both overall hiring and in tech roles.

Pichai said that all these investments will create a great economic impact on the United States. In 2020, Google Search, Google Play, YouTube and Google advertising tools helped provide $426 billion of economic activity for more than 2 million American businesses, nonprofits, publishers, creators and developers.
