In honour of the protests that are occurring across the world to highlight racial inequality and discrimination, the mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser has changed the name of a plaza outside the White House to ‘Black Lives Matter.’
The mayor also unveiled a massive two-block mural painting on the street with the words ‘Black Lives Matter’ in asphalt yellow leading right up to the White House. Further, a new street sign for the plaza was also installed in the city at the intersection of H and 16th Streets.
Marking the square in front of St. John’s Church with the new “Black Lives Matter Plaza” sign, Bowser said, “As Washingtonians, we simply all want to be here together in peace to demonstrate that in America, you can peacefully assemble, you can bring grievances to your government, and you can demand change.”

This largely symbolic move comes as Washington DC prepares for more protests over the death of African-American George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.
Also, earlier, police and National Guard troops removed peaceful demonstrators, spraying tear gas to clear President Donald Trump’s path for a photo-op with a Bible at the St. John’s Church.
