The Liceu Opera in Barcelona, also called the Gran Teatre del Liceu, held its first concert in over three months – it was shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. And who were the audience once it opened to a full house?
We doubt you’d be able to guess who these unique spectators were.
Nearly 2,300 house plants!
The event was conceived by Spanish artist Eugenio Ampudia who said he was inspired by nature during the pandemic.
According to a statement on the website of Liceu Opera, “After a strange, painful period, the creator, the Liceu’s artistic director and the curator Blanca de la Torre offer us a different perspective for our return to activity, a perspective that brings us closer to something as essential as our relationship with nature.”
As part of the concert, a string quartet performed Giacomo Puccini’s “Crisantemi” for the unique audience that were all bought from local nurseries.
Post the concert, the plants will be delivered to 2,292 healthcare workers, primarily at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, for their exemplary work in fighting COVID-19 and helping the world be a safer place. The healthcare professionals will also receive a certificate.
