What is Data Privacy?

Data Privacy is the aspect of Information Technology (IT) that deals with appropriate handling of data. It focusses on the ability of an individual or an establishment to have control over the kind of data that can be shared with external agencies or third parties. It also deals with whether data can be collected or stored by third parties. In short, data privacy exercises control over how data is collected, used, and shared.

Why is Data Privacy Important?

Think of this scenario. You meet a stranger on a train and begin to talk to him. You might like to share your name, your profession, and a few other basic details. You’d certainly not be comfortable in sharing other personal details of yours. In the same manner, you are comfortable sharing personal details with family or close friends.

Today, data is everything! There are businesses that run only on data. In such a scenario, it is crucial that you have the right to share a certain kind of information with whomever you wish to.

What is Data Privacy Day?

This day is observed on 28 January each year to create awareness about rights to personal data privacy and protection as well as share data protection best practices. It commemorates the signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding document on data privacy and protection.
