16th November is observed as ‘International Day of Tolerance’ by the United Nations.

In the massive diversity that exists in the world, only tolerance towards other religions, traditions, beliefs, and virtues can bring about a harmonious society. This day seeks to recognize the importance of tolerance in today’s world of radicalism and violence. Certainly, a modicum of tolerance can bring about a great positive change.

The day also seeks to create awareness about the principles of tolerance.

UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-violence

On this day, the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-violence is awarded. It “rewards significant activities in the scientific, artistic, cultural and communication fields aimed at the promotion of a spirit of tolerance and non-violence.” This prize seeks to uphold the virtues of the UNESCO Constitution that states that “peace if it is not to fail, must be founded on the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind.”

This prize is named after its benefactor Madanjeet Singh, who was a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Indian artist, writer, and diplomat. It is awarded to a person or organization that has promoted tolerance and non-violence.

First awarded in 1996, this award is given away once in two years and the recipient is awarded a sum of $100,000.

Team Newsum wishes all of you a Happy International Day of Tolerance!
