Halloween is synonymous with costumes. While there are a plethora of options available in the market for costumes, none of them is disabled-friendly. Keeping that in mind, Target has unveiled special Halloween costumes for kids with disabilities.

These costumes have been launched by Target’s Hyde and Eek! Boutique range. They come in two variants—pirate and princess. The costumes also have separate props that will turn the wheelchair into a pirate ship or a princess carriage. Now isn’t that exciting!

The ‘ship’ or the ‘carriage’ wheelchair covers are adjustable. They can be cut and made to fit the wheelchairs of different sizes. The cut-outs can then be attached to the wheelchair using hook-and-loop closures. And there is absolutely no need for parents to worry as these costumes are very secure and safe.

This is an important step by Target. Costumes are a big thing around Halloween. But kids with disabilities have to depend upon the costumes rustled up by their parents at home. The option for ready-made costumes is almost nil for them. But not anymore. Thanks to these costumes by Target.

“We’re now bringing that spirit of inclusivity to our new Hyde and Eek! Boutique kids’ adaptive Halloween costumes, which we hope will bring more ease and joy to our guests’ everyday lives,” a Target spokesperson told CBS News.

Apart from the pirate and princess costumes, Target has also launched costumes for children with sensory processing difficulties. These ‘shark’ and ‘unicorn’ costumes have flat seams and no tags for an ultra-comfy feel. They also come equipped with detachable features and hidden openings in order to be less irksome for kids with sensory processing difficulties.

This initiative by Target is a step in the right direction. People with disabilities have for long, been devoid of any choices when it comes to ready-made apparels. Such initiatives will not only provide them with choices, but will also make them feel more inclusive.

While few fashion brands like Target have taken a step towards inclusivity, more and more such brands should come forward and join the initiative. Let’s hope that in future we see more such initiatives that will provide the disabled with wardrobe choices and make them feel fashionable.

What do you think of this initiative? Do let us know in the comments below.
