Adapting to a time when people are not touching too many things due to the pandemic, ace sportswear brand Nike has recently released a pair of laceless sneakers called Go FlyEase, which can be put on and taken off without using your hands.
The first pair of Nike’s entirely hands free sneakers, this is the latest addition to the brand’s FlyEase range. The trainers are made of two sections that are connected by a hinge. This allows users to wear them and remove them easily without the use of their hands.
Putting the shoes on and off is easy because a tension band secures the shoe rather than the conventional laces.
“Shoes for a long time have been a bit antiquated in the way that we undo the laces and then lace them up, this is a more modern, more elegant way to get in and out of your shoes and an easier way – you don’t even think about it,” explained Nike design lead and American Paralympic triathlete Sarah Reinersten.
“There are no laces, and there’s no need to use hands when you have no laces,” she told Dezeen. “So there’s no laces or adjustable containment needed. It has a beautiful new, clog-like shape that’s very easy to slip into.”
While these trainers seem complex mechanically, there have been designed to be intuitive. “We designed this based on human behaviour,” said Reinersten. “So we feel like this is intuitive in the way that your foot goes into a shoe – you can step in and go.”
The company said that it was inspired to create such a shoe by Asian cultures, where the norm is to remove one’s shoe before entering a home.
These trainers will be sold for $120 from mid February onwards for subscribers of the free membership program on Nike’s website. However, they will be sold on a greater level mid year onwards.
