7th April is celebrated as World Health Day across the world. It seeks to spread awareness about the importance of health, both mental and physical, and how it can be improved. It also seeks to draw attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year by means of a specific theme.

History of the World Health Day

It was in 1948 that the First World Health Assembly called for the creation of a day specific to health. Since 1950, the Word Health Day is observed on 7th April to commemorate the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO), the specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health.

Theme or World Health Day 2020

The theme for the World Health Day 2020 is ‘Support Nurses and Midwives.’

Nurses and midwives play a critical role in providing healthcare services across the world. In many communities, they are the first and the only point of care. They provide care to patients by monitoring the vital parameters of patients, administer life-saving immunizations, and generally improve the quality of healthcare provided to patients.

This theme seeks to celebrate, appreciate, and recognize the role of nurses and midwives in maintaining the healthcare services around the world. It also underscores the current status of nursing across the world and make recommendations to strengthen the nursing and midwifery workforce. Further, it seeks to highlight the challenging working conditions they face and advocate for higher investments in the nursing workforce.

The year 2020 is also being celebrated as the International Year for of the Nurse and the Midwife.

Wishing all our readers a very happy World Health Day! May we all be more healthy, this year and always!
