Whenever we hear Wonder Woman, the persona that comes to our minds is that of Gal Gadot wearing her shining armour and beating the bad guys. But that’s not the case in Nepal. This real-life Wonder Woman has been fighting against evil practices!

Popularly known as Dijju (elder sister), Anuradha Koirala was born to Colonel Pratap Singh Gurung and Laxmi Gurung and was brought up in a family that believed that services for humankind as the best form of pious work.

Affected by her own personal abusive relationship, Anuradha became a crusader in the fight against sexual exploitation of women in Nepal. Due to universal problems such as poverty, the menace of human trafficking in Nepal has been a long time problem. And Anuradha decided to do her bit to end this.

Influenced by her convent education and inspired by Mother Teresa, Anuradha founded Maiti Nepal in 1993 –  a non-profit organization that gives shelter and provides medical treatment and counselling to the victims. Thanks to her herculean efforts and firm determination, Maiti Nepal has saved more than 12,000 girls and has created three prevention homes, eleven transit homes, two hospices, and a formal school.

In recognition of her courageous and selfless acts that advance the cause of children’s and women’s rights, Anuradha has won more than 38 national and International awards till date, including being declared the CNN Hero in 2010.
