Greta Thunberg turns 17!

Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg turned 17 on 3rd January 2020. But considering how often and how much of her we have seen, it seems unreal that this powerhouse is just 17.

And how did she celebrate her birthday?

Absolutely no surprises there. She did so by holding a seven-hour protest against climate change outside the Swedish parliament. Despite the formidable winter conditions, Greta held on to her protest.

In her trademark style, she said, “I’m not the kind of person who celebrates birthdays.”

When asked what her plans for the big day were, she told Reuters, “I stand here striking from 8am until 3pm as usual … then I’ll go home.”

“I won’t have a birthday cake but we’ll have a dinner.”

Thunberg has had an excessively busy last year, travelling across the world to address conferences and global leaders about climate change. She has also been awarded the TIME Person of the Year, making her the youngest recipient ever.

Thunberg also put up an endearing picture of herself on social media, thanking people for wishing her on her special day.

Meanwhile, American singer and songwriter Patti Smith shared a short poem celebrating Greta’s birthday. She put up a picture of the climate activist on Instagram and wrote a caption,

“This is Greta Thunberg, turning
seventeen today, asking for no accolade, no gifts,
save we not be neutral.
The Earth knows its kind,
just as all deities, just as
animals and the healing
spring. Happy birthday
to Greta, who stood today,
as every Friday, refusing
to be neutral.”

Isn’t this a beautiful writeup?

Wishing Greta a very happy birthday! We hope that she inspires many more across the globe to fight climate change.
