Born on 18th July 1918, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, a philanthropist, and a beacon for social justice. Starting in 1962, Mandela spent close to three decades in prison and was released only in 1990 following massive domestic and international pressure. Following this, he became the first black President of South Africa in 1994 and served until 1999.
