Hosts Australia beat India by 85 runs at the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to win its fifth title on 8th March 2020.

Australia won the title earlier in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2018.

The hosts won the toss, decided to bat, and got to a wonderful start by scoring 184 runs before bundling out India for 99 with a fantastic bowling effort.

A total of 86,174 spectators watched the match, creating an electric atmosphere and a new Australian record at a women’s sporting event.

Alyssa Healy was awarded the player of the World Cup final for her blazing 75 runs from a mere 39 deliveries. She just took 30 balls to reach her half century, a record for the fastest ever by any man or woman in all ICC finals.

American singer Katy Perry performed at the event before and after the match.

Post the match, Australian captain Meg Lanning said, “I’m really proud of this group of players – we’ve had everything thrown at us, we’ve had our ups and downs and scraped through the tournament but it was our best performance on the biggest stage.

“After we lost that first game, there was a lot of expectation on us and a lot of tough times, but we stuck together and we had each other’s backs throughout.”

Player of the tournament

Beth Mooney from Australia was awarded the player of the tournament: she scored the most number of runs – 259 – in the tournament.

A big congratulations to the champions from Team Newsum!
