The 2019 Rugby World Cup is starting soon

The 2019 Rugby World Cup is due to begin on 20th September. Hosted by Japan for the first time ever, it will end on 2nd November. A total of 20 teams will participate in the tournament, playing 48 matches.

The matches will be held in 12 venues across Japan. The opening match will be held on 20th September at the Tokyo Stadium whereas the finals will be held in the Yokohama Stadium in Kanagawa on 2nd November.

Interestingly, this is the first time that the World Cup is being held in Asia.

New Zealand is the defending champion of the World Cup, winning it for a record third time in 2015.

More about the 2019 Rugby World Cup

Held first in 1987 and co-hosted by Australia and Nee Zealand, the Rugby World Cup is held once in four years. It is administered by World Rugby, the governing body of Rugby in the world.

New Zealand has won the World Cup a record three times while Australia and South Africa have won the tournament twice each. England has won the tournament once.

The winner of the tournament is awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis, who is often credited as the inventor of the game of rugby football.
