Magnus Carlsen is not known as the ‘Mozart of Chess’ for nothing.
On 14th January this year, the Norwegian grandmaster made history in the chess world when he extended his unbeaten match streak to 111 successive classical games. To achieve this landmark, the 29-year-old genius drew against Jorden van Foreest in the fourth round of the Wijk aan Zee tournament held in the Netherlands.
In the process, he surpassed the 110-game streak set by Russian Sergei Tiviakov in 2005 and broke the 15-year-old record.
What is remarkable is that Carlsen has achieved this feat against a higher caliber of opponents than Tiviakov did.
Who is Magnus Carlsen?
Born on 30th November 1990, Magnus Carlsen is the current World Chess Champion, World Rapid Chess Champion, and World Blitz Champion.
This prodigy first became the World Chess Champion in 2013 by defeating Viswanathan Anand. In 2014, he retained his title and further won the World Rapid Chess Championship and the World Blitz Chess Championship, becoming the first ever to hold all the three titles simultaneously.
Little wonder that the man is counted as one of the greatest of all time in the world of chess.
