The coronavirus disrupted the 2020 sporting calendar, causing many disruptions: while many major sporting events of 2020 were cancelled or postponed, some were still held with limited or no audience. And 2020 did have some blockbuster events that will be remembered for years to come.

In this article, we take a look at the most popular sporting events of 2020 and their winners.

Australian Open (Tennis)

Held from 20th January to 2nd February 2020 at Melbourne Park, the 2020 Australian Open was the 108th edition of the tournament.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic from Serbia successfully defended his title by defeating Dominic Thiem to win the men’s singles title for a record eighth time. In the women’s singles event, Sofia Kenin defeated Garbine Muguruza to win her maiden Grand Slam.

ICC Women’s T20 World Cup (Cricket)

The 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was held from 21st February to 8th March 2020 in Australia. Teams from 10 nations across the world participated in the event and the 23 matches were played across four Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Perth.

The hosts Australia beat India to win their fifth title. Beth Mooney from Australia was awarded the Player of the series for scoring the most runs in the entire tournament.

US Open (Tennis)

The US Open was held at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York from 31st August to 13th August.

Austrian Dominic Thiem won the men’s singles title by defeating German Alexander Zverev to win his first Grand Slam title. In the women’s singles, Naomi Osaka won the 2020 women’s singles title by defeating Victoria Azarenka from Belarus, winning her second US Open title and her third title overall.

French Open (Tennis)

The French Open for 2020 was held from 27th September to 11th October 2020.

Defending champion Spaniard Rafael Nadal beat Serbian Novak Djokovic to win a record 13th French Open men’s singles title and his 20th overall Grand Slam title. With this victory, Nadal also tied with Roger Federer for winning the most number of Grand Slam men’s titles.

The women’s singles was won by Iga Swiatek from Poland, who won her first Grand Slam title by defeating American Sofia Kenin. In winning the title, Swiatek became the first player from Poland to win a Grand Slam.

English Premier League (Football)

Liverpool were crowned the English Premier League champions for the 2019-2020 season, ending a 30-year drought. After their impressive win across the season, manager Jurgen Klopp’s winning team was widely considered the best ever in EPL history.

Indian Premier League (Cricket)

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was held in Dubai from 19th September to 10th November. This thirteenth edition of the IPL was won by defending champions Mumbai Indians by beating Delhi Capitals.

Unfortunately, the biggest sporting event ever – the Tokyo Olympics – has been postponed to next year. While the Wimbledon Championships for tennis was cancelled, the men’s T20 Cricket World Cup, and the Euro 2020 in Football were postponed.

We hope the next year would be more exciting for sports lovers from across the world!
