Ashleigh Barty from Australia won the WTA Finals held in Shenzhen, China by beating defending champion Elina Svitolina from Ukraine 6-4, 6-3 in less than an hour and a half on 3rd November 2019. In the process, she won the biggest prize money in the history of tennis ever – an astounding $4.42 million! She also became the only fifth player to win the title on her debut.

The last Australian to win the WTA Finals was Evonne Goolagong Cawley, who won the title in 1976.

The WTA finals is an event in which only the top eight ranked players participate.

The 23-year-old current World Number one has had an exceptional 2019. She started the year as world number 15 but along her way, she won her first Grand Slam – the French Open and ended the year with a ranking of number one.

Post the win, Barty, who is also a former cricketer, said, “It has been a remarkable year tonight was about coming out and fighting to the end. I couldn’t be prouder. It has been an incredible year.”

“I’m proud of myself and the team, we tried to put ourselves in the biggest situations and occasions and we managed to do that.”

She also shared a picture of herself with the WTA Finals trophy on social media, with just the words ‘Incredible.’
