Adidas creates sustainable football field by using 1.8 million plastic bottles

The sporting-wear company Adidas has long been known for its focus on sustainability and environment.

And now, it has gone a step further in its effort towards sustainability by creating a sustainable football field using a whopping 1.8 million plastic bottles!

These plastic bottles have been sourced from beaches, remote islands, and shorelines that would have otherwise polluted the oceans. This plastic was washed with care and treated before it was used as infill for the field.

The infill looks like little pellets and is typically used on pitches. It is an integral part of any turf as it increases the playability, safety, and performance of the field. It increases the cushioning of the ground so when players dive, fall, or slide, they are better protected. The infill also help the players get more traction.

“We believe that through sport we have the power to change lives, and this field is a demonstration of our taking action on that belief,” Cameron Collins, the North America director of football at Adidas, said in a statement. “More than a place for these young athletes to play, it’s a reminder of our collective responsibility to end plastic waste.”

This field has been donated by Adidas to the Miami Edison High School in Florida. This school is a short drive away from the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, which was the venue of Super Bowl LIV.

The company has been known for its sustainability initiatives in the past. For instance, earlier it also made shoes from plastic waste.
