Google honours iconic Indian actress Madhubala

Google commemorated the 86th birthday of the legendary Indian actress Madhubala by creating a doodle. In the doodle, she is shown as Anarkali, one of her most famous portrayals on-screen in the iconic film Mughal-E-Azam. One of the most celebrated stars ever of Indian cinema, she was known for her elegance, grace, and beauty along with her commendable acting abilities.

Born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi on 14th February 1933, Madhubala started her career in Bollywood at the young age of 9 to support her impoverished family. She worked in some remarkable films such as Mahal, Chalti ka Naam Gaadi, Kala Paani, and Howrah Bridge. However, it is the film Mughal-E-Azam for which she is most remembered. In the movie that has gained cult status since it was released, she played the role of a court dancer, Anarkali, and immortalized the character.

In her short career spanning about two decades, she acted in over 70 films. It is also widely known that she attracted the attention of Hollywood and noted film director Frank Capra, who wanted to bring her to Los Angeles. Also, ace Hollywood photographer James Burke photographed her for an edition of the Life magazine way back in the 50s. Further, in its 1952 edition, Theatre Arts magazine famously called her ‘the biggest star in the world.’

Unfortunately, she passed away on 23rd February 1969 at the ripe age of 36 due to a chronic illness caused by a ventricular septal defect. However, until today, she remains one of the most enduring personalities of Indian cinema.
